The church family has its roots in old College Park before the days of the current Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

In 1919, a group began meeting for Bible study at SE Main and Francis streets. The church flourished in that location until 1967, when airport expansion began that eventually took the original site.

Longtime member G.W. Northcutt donated land to build a new facility on Norman Drive. The church relocated in 1969 and enjoyed ministering to the College Park /Riverdale area from that location. In the late 1980's, the membership began declining as people moved further away from the area. The church kept ministering to the community.

Second Baptist was approached by Christian Fellowship Baptist Church about the possibility of purchasing their facilities. After much prayer and study, the church voted to sell and relocate to property previously purchased on McDonough Road in Fayetteville. For two years, both congregations shared the Norman Drive facility as the congregation transitioned to Fayetteville

On March 6, 1994, the Second Baptist congregation drove by caravan to the McDonough Road location and began their witness with a new name, a new facility, and a new opportunity. McDonough Road Baptist Church continues the heritage of a warm, loving church family with a big heart and open arms, ready to love everyone. Spiritually speaking, to many people, this church "feels like home".
